Atmospheric River Contributions to Ice Sheet Hydroclimate at the Last Glacial Maximum

چکیده
Abstract Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are an important driver of surface mass balance over today's Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. Using paleoclimate simulations with the Community Earth System Model, we find ARs also had a key influence on extensive sheets Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). provide up to 53% total precipitation along margins eastern Laurentide sheet 22%–27% Patagonian, western Cordilleran, Fennoscandian Despite overall cold conditions at LGM, temperatures during AR events often above freezing, resulting in more rain than snow that promote melt. The results suggest may have role growth melt previous glacial periods accelerated retreat following LGM.

Dynamics of the last glacial maximum Antarctic ice-sheet and its response to ocean forcing.
Retreat of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) Antarctic ice sheet is thought to have been initiated by changes in ocean heat and eustatic sea level propagated from the Northern Hemisphere (NH) as northern ice sheets melted under rising atmospheric temperatures. The extent to which spatial variability in ice dynamics may have modulated the resultant pattern and timing of decay of the Antarctic ice s...
متن کاملSupport for the Innuitian Ice Sheet in the Canadian High Arctic during the Last Glacial Maximum
The extent of glacier ice in the Canadian High Arctic during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) has been debated for decades. One school proposed a regional Innuitian Ice Sheet whereas another proposed a smaller, non-contiguous Franklin Ice Complex. Research throughout western Nares Strait supports coalescent Innuitian and Greenland ice during the LGM, based on widespread glacial and marine deposit...
متن کاملQuantifying ice-sheet feedbacks during the last glacial inception
[1] The last glacial inception ( 116 ky ago) has long been used to test the sensitivity of climate models to insolation. From these simulations, atmospheric, oceanic and vegetation feedbacks have been shown to amplify the initial insolation signal into a rapid growth of ice-sheets over the northern hemisphere. However, due to the lack of comprehensive atmosphere-ocean-vegetation-northern hemisp...
متن کاملThe Geologic Basis for a Reconstruction of a Grounded Ice Sheet in Mcmurdo sound, Antarctica, at the Last Glacial Maximum
A grounded ice sheet fed from the Ross Embayment filled McMurdo Sound at the last glacial maximum (LGM). This sheet deposited the little-weathered Ross Sea drift sheet, with far-traveled Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) erratics, on lower slopes of volcanic islands and peninsulas in the Sound, as well as on coastal forelands along the TAM front. The mapped upper limit of this drift, commonly mark...
متن کاملIce sheets and sea level of the Last Glacial Maximum
This paper outlines the general issues regarding ice sheets and sea level of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), which formed the basis of an EPILOG Project workshop. Papers in this special issue of Quaternary Science Reviews provide a comprehensive assessment of these issues from the perspective of geological reconstructions of ice sheet extent, records of sea-level change, ice sheet modelling, ge...
